Question I have a project. Seriously!

Howdy folks! I hope I am posting this in the right place.

I have been thinking of cheaper and more inventive ways of getting things accomplished lately, since I am out of work and the economy stinks. I've been quite creative in my attempts at this. Here's one of my ideas, and some questions at the end about it. That's where you come in!

I had a bright idea that came from a trip to the mall the other day. I have quite the affinity for makeup, especially eyeshadow. I was at Sephora and they had an eyeshadow that I have wanted for-ev-er, and I was shocked to see that 1.) it was $18 for one single eyeshadow, and 2.) it didn't come in a compact. It was just a refill pan, and if you wanted a case for it, you had to pay $2 more. The refill pans also fit inside trio or quad refillable palettes which are $13 and up. By gum, I am not paying $20+ for one eyeshadow and a case for it!

This is where my idea comes in. I could make my own palettes! Right? Why not? I'm not a very crafty person (yet!!!) but I could try. The eyeshadows come in little metal pots, and if they are come in a case, you can remove the pan from the case (I saw an instructional video for that on YouTube). If I have something magnetized to sit them in, it would be like a palette, right? Something with a lid that closes. And I'm sure, just sure, that this can be done cheaply!

So I did some digging online. I found out that there are these shallow compact-disc-sized tins out there, which sounds great for affixing four or five eyeshadow pans! They have them on eBay, they are $3 each including shipping. If you search on eBay for "compact disc tin container" you can see a photo of it. My plan is coming together.

This is my first question for you fine folks. Will a magnet stick to tin objects? I am getting conflicting from links on Google, believe it or not. It seems like a simple question! Anybody here know Bill Nye the Science Guy?

Second question is, has anyone ever seen these cd tin containers in stores? The JoAnn Fabrics website shows that they have the square version, but only available through online ordering, and the shipping is $5.95, which kind of defeats my purpose of being superfrugal.

Third question is: If I put an adhesive magnet layer on the bottom of my tin, would my eyeshadow pans stick to the magnet? What do you guys think? If not, would I also need to put square magnet pieces on the bottom of the eyeshadow pans? I know I sound like an idiot but don't some magnets repel each other? Do they make magnet sets that are pairs, that will definitely attract? Should I just glue the things into the tin???

So those are my ideas and questions. I am hoping I will find some kind of conclusive answers someday. I've Googled my little fingers off about this all day. I'm hoping some of you crafty folks have dealt with magnets and little do-it-yourself stuff like this.

Thank you for any help. It's okay if you think I'm nuts. I am just really committed to this idea the more I think about it! I really wanna do this!!!

I think they make magnetic sticky tape. You could 'stick' it to the eye shadow, then it would hold by the magnet to the tin.

Or you could forget about magnets and just use two sided stickey tape. Then you could use any kind of container. Plastic, whatever you like. Which would be very budget friendly.

I like the double sided tape idea! I was going suggest that or carpet tape(cut down of course) or double side foam tape (both are available in the hardware dept at Wal-Mart - cheap!) Magnets can get expensive and like you said may not work.

I would also suggest checking out the dollar bins at both Target and Michael's or a Dollar Tree Store if you have one near. Often they have really cool small containers that may work perfectly for your "project"!

Good Luck!

Hmmm, double sided foam tape sounds great, I think we may even have some from when we used to tape those fake candle things in the windows around the holidays. And I could use a shallow pencil tin or plastic pencil box, maybe... I bet I have one of those already!

THIS IS GONNA BE AWESOME!!!

See, this will save money. Think about it. In the long run, it will. Palettes cost at least $13 for eyeshadow refill pans, at least!, and they hold anywhere from 3-15 shadows. So if I make my own, I am saving that much! And when you buy a shadow without the casing, which I would no longer need cause I have my handy dandy homemade palette, it's $2-$3 cheaper! This also saves time because instead of having a bunch of them in a shelf thing together , I can use them in a palette together without having to dig for the one I want.

You know what this means, don't you. It means I am smart.

Thank you for the help, girls! I am going to do some rummaging around the house tomorrow. I bet I have some supplies for my project laying around here somewhere! Wheeee!!!
