Homemade Mickey Ornament!

Hi All!!!!

In searching for the perfect project to celebrate the new homepage, I decided it would be a Mickey Ornament. After lots of samples, I got it right! I hope you enjoy them. Please post any pictures or improvements you may have made.

Supplies:
Assorted Shatterproof Ornaments

Glue Gun (NOT Low temp)
Ruler

1. Select 1 large and 2 small ornament balls.

2. Remove ornament holders from small balls.

3. On the larger ball measure 1/3” to 1/2” from ornament holder and place a small mark. Use your own judgment for ear placement.

4. Holding the larger ball in your left hand, place the tip of the hot glue gun over the mark slowly let the tip melt into the ball. This may melt very fast, so be very careful.

5. Let the tip melt the entire way into the ball.

6. Slowly pull the tip out of the ball, as you do, squeeze a small amount the of hot glue into the opening of the ball. If part of the ball comes out with glue gun, push it back in with the tip.

7. Quickly lay down the glue and pick up the smaller ball and place into the hole made by the glue gun. If it is a tight fit, gently push in, the warm plastic should let it go in.

8. Hold both pieces together for a few seconds and repeat on other side.

You now have a handmade Mickey ornament.

Note: If you get melted plastic on your glue gun, simply wipe off with a paper towel or napkin while still hot.

The options for different variety are almost endless. Just use your imagination and your creativity.

Here is a printable version of the instructions:

I did one! But my ears ended up being too close together by the time I was done. But I still like him even if Steve Barrett would say it's not a perfect Mickey.

Thanks. I bought the ornaments that way at Michaels individually. I only wanted to make one because I don't have a Disney tree this year and didn't want to buy a whole package to just make one.

How cute! This could save me some serious money
on my next trip. I always spend a fortune on new ornaments
and decorations each time we visit. The colors look like
something they would have designed. Thanks for the idea
and instructions!!

i just absolutely love them all!!!!!!!!!!!
but i have to ask one question, i'm on line now trying to find ornaments that might be on sale, but all i am seeing is plastic ones, they are not saying shatter proof, are the plastic ok?
won't the glue gun melt them?
what else should i be looking for?
TIA

sorry got another question, what sizes should i look for?
i see tons of balls on the kmart site but i am only see 48MM and 30MM, i am wondering if the 30MM would be too big looking (as ears) on the 48MM......
what do you think?
should i look for a bigger MM for the head, like 60MM? and use the 30MM for the ears?
Sorry for all the questions!!

Hi Danielle,

Welcome to Scrapping the Magic!!!!

Plastic balls are fine. Actually shatterproof balls are plastic. That is what makes them easy to work with in this project. If the plastic is thin, you may want use a low temp glue gun. If the balls are hard and firm, you should be able to use the regular (hot) temp ones.

As for the sizes, I'm not really sure what sizes I used. I sort of just looked at the size in the packages, and judged for the main head and then the ears. I will try and look this afternoon at what size I used. I bought some really big balls this past weekend and am going to try a BIG one.

Never be afraid to ask questions. That is what we are here for, to help and support each other!

Good Luck and don't forget to post pictures!!!
